fire

Our allotments were attacked by vandals overnight. They broke into several sheds before setting fire to the Seed Store Cafe.

Our lovely pistachio-colored cafe is now a charred black heap. Here's where our serving counters used to be:

And here's our sink and other bits salvaged from the building:

There's literally nothing left: everything has been lost, right down to the teaspoons.

We're completely devastated but determined to carry on. We've decided to set up a cake stall in one of the old sheds this Sunday, and Jenny is on her way now to buy disposable cups, etc.

I just don't understand how someone could do this...

  4. Oh Kristina, I just don't know what to say, words just do not cover it. So incredibly senseless, such destruction just makes no sense at all.

I am so glad you feel you have the energy to carry on, they cannot take your spirit away from you. I hope that some good can come out of this, somehow.

  5. What a horrible thing to have happened! If only people would think about how their actions make other people feel, but of course they don't.

  6. Oh, that's appalling. I'm so sorry. Some people are quite frankly a waste of space.

  9. Oh Kristina, what mindless destruction. I just don't understand why people need to do this.

Glad you're all determined to carry on, and not be defeated.

    Happy weekend.

  10. I am so sorry because it undermines your trust in other people. It is possible to rebuild sheds and install sinks and tables but trust is not so easy to rebuild.

  11. Dreadful, dreadful, and so hard to understand. But good for you, all of you, to carry on regardless. I hope something even better than the old Cafe rises from the ashes.

  13. Oh Kristina - how horrible. Things like this really knock your faith in humanity. Hope the allotmenteers blitz spirit helps to restore it.

  14. And to think you were just showing off cake from the café mere moments ago! Oh, that just breaks my heart. Give yourself an extra big hug from me, and bask in the goodness of all of these caring commenters if you can...

  15. Hi Kristina, delurking to add my commiserations. It is just senseless. It sounds like you and the other allotment keepers will not be defeated. I have been meaning to get in touch to say how much I enjoy your blog and to thank you for introducing me to Springbok jigsaw puzzles. I am now officially hooked! The shapes are so intriguing. I am always convinced there must be a piece missing (I’ve been buying them second-hand on Ebay), yet it all comes together at the end. Also, I wonder if this book might interest you – The Tortoise and the Hare by Elizabeth Jenkins. I bought it at the Persephone bookshop. It was an impulse buy as it was laid as bait at the till, just like M&S with its chocolate bars! I was at Wisley last Saturday too. (I was the one with the toddler having a noisy melt down in the café by the glasshouse……) Anyway, I hope Sunday goes well for you all. Best wishes, Anita

  16. Kristina--I'm so sorry about your terrible loss. What a shock. So senseless. Unbelievable what some people are capable of doing.

I'm glad you're not letting this stop you, though. Your determination to keep going is an inspiration. I'm really proud of you...

  23. Hello, just arrived here from DottyCookie. This is absolutely horrific!!!!! Who on earth would do such a terrible thing?? The only comfort I have seeing the outcome of such a mindless act, is knowing that one of the best things about Allotments is the community spirit, and so I'm sure you'll all be back up and running soon. x

  24. I read about the fire over at dottycookie - how crushing and baffling. A mindless act. It looks as though you have bounced back admirably though. I hope spirits at the allotment haven't been affected too much. Emma x
