bee girls

Jo and I are terribly keen to have a beehive on the allotments. We still have some obstacles to overcome, but we've been learning as much as we can over the past few months from experienced beekeepers and stacks of books:

Having soaked up the theory, we figured it was time for some practical experience. So on Sunday, we attended the first session of the Kingston Beekeepers' Fast Track Beginners Beekeeping Course.

We learned how to light a smoker, then donned borrowed bee suits and yellow washing-up gloves to observe a hive inspection:

We also learned how to make frames and clean the hives and equipment. Next week, after the morning inspection, we'll discuss swarm control, setting up a new hive, feeding, and extracting honey.

Jo is ahead of me as she's just ordered her own bee suit. I think we'd look far more fetching in Pushing Daisies Bee Girl outfits...

but I suppose safety and practicality must come first!

  1. Tell me you haven't seen the Eddie Izzard beekeeper sketch. Tell me you haven't, and then I can find it on Youtube and send you it.

  2. My neighbour keeps bees. He looks very bizarre in his get-up. But the honey is good.

  5. I can't quite put my finger on the fascination with bees but they are so interesting. What lucky ladies you both are to have such an opportunity, please keep us posted on how things progress!

  6. That sketch is a winner. How exciting about your potential hive and what a strange coincidence. I made a silver beehive today!

  8. Ooh, how exciting! We're not allowed to keep bees on our allotment so I am doing my best to encourage them with lots of flowers and lavender!

  9. You definitely want to have more headgear than a heavy 60s-style fringe! Sounds very intriguing, these new bee skills of yours.

  10. Are you going to design and sew your own Bee Keeper's suit? That would be the "Bee's knees"...

  11. How marvellous! I've been pointing out those hives to Mr M for yonks. My grandpa was a bee keeper - there's nothing better than homemade honey. Hope all is well! x

  12. I really want to have bees, as well! I took one intro class, but didn't get to try all the equipment like you did. Sounds as though you'll be well prepared!

(And I just adore all of Chuck's outfits in that show! So cute).
